.LUXEMBOURG METER MAIL - The 1928 TIMBROGRAPHE 201 RARITY
Used at Wiltz by Ideal Tannerie (1927-1939)
FSPL, Cataloque des Cachets des Types Timbrographe, Safag, Frama and Francotyp at p. 8,
and Vivian Jarvis, in the Luxembourg Philatelist journal, explain that the Belgian-made Timbrographe 201 device is similar in design to the Hasler 1920s design.
This meter machine was the only Timbrographe device used in Luxembourg. Minor changes were made in 1939 to accommodate denominational imprint deletions and additions, and again late in the WW2 occupation to accommodate German currency.
Vivian Jarvis comments in her meter mail exhibit that “[f]or all the years this machine was in use, there are very few examples of its meter impressions in existence - a scant dozen are known to collectors.”
The meter mail cover shown here:
Luxembourg 201 75c (2 impressions) pays the 1.50F UPU-rate to Ravena, Italy, 7 Jun 1928 (it's the EKU - 11 days before the EKU shown in the FSPL catalog). Since the imprint did not contain the date, Timbrographe meter mail nevertheless had to be postmarked.
